Take a minute. Think about it. What does modest fashion mean to you? Does this picture come to your mind?
If yes then it’s time to change that opinion. If no, then you’re awesome!
To begin with, modest fashion was/is thought to be another name for Muslimah fashion. But this trend is gaining ground internationally and it is not confined by the bounds of religion or spirituality. Anybody with a penchant for aesthetic is attracted to this movement. The industry said to reach almost $500 billion by 2020.
According to an article in Forbes, ‘modest fashion is being stylish while remaining relatively covered.’
It is taking on international ramps with grace and power. These already “less cool” closet styles are presently en vogue.
In the times where plunging necklines and skimpy clothes are making it big, modest fashion is like a breath of fresh air in the fashion industry.
Who put it on the map?
The modest fashion wave was first recognized globally with model Halima Aden. She was the first woman to wear a hijab at US Miss Minnesota Pageant. She was also signed to IMG agency, the modeling agency behind supermodels like the Hadid sisters, Chrissy Teigen, and Barbara Palvin. Here is an excerpt from her Vogue Arabia interview.
While modest dressing has become more widespread, Aden insists it’s not a style fad that will change with the seasons. “It’s not just a way of dress, it’s a way of life,” she says. “As the origins are often from religious beliefs, it’s a trend that is here to stay.” However, the 20-year-old model is also quick to point out that you don’t have to be Muslim or wear a hijab to dress modestly, and retailers are taking note – Marks & Spencer and Macy’s have expanded their lines to include modest collections. – Courtesy Vogue Arabia
Isn’t it boring?
This is a question that many enthusiasts will ask. Well, the answer depends on your aesthetic. It is the aesthetic which is drawing everyone to this movement.
There is so much elegance and poise in dressing so if one has an eye to appreciate it.
Meet the beautiful Noorain (@thehijabivignettes), a modest fashion blogger we collaborated with from Bangalore. She chose a Sougat Paul gown from our collection and chose to give it a twist!
If you will look at the gown on the left, nobody would categorize into modest fashion by virtue of the sleeve and the sheer bodice. But Noorain wore a skin-colored body suit along with the hijab and instantly made it her own.
This is a true blue example of how you can set your own rules in the fashion industry and look incredible at the same time. Keep in mind that you can turn any outfit to suit yourself.
After all clothes are just pieces of fabric until we breathe life into them.
I get a lot of messages from girls and I want them to know that I was strong enough to be part of this industry while not compromising my values. I never let being the first scare me into quitting.” – Halima Aden
Here is another outfit inspiration from Noorain, this time wearing a Ritu Kumar cape jacket and clutch from our collection.
This cape jacket is actually a plunging neckline but Noorain turned it into an equally glam outfit. Preeeeeach girl!
