A-Z Fashion Glossary: ‘Y’ stands for?

Y stands for a yoke. A yoke is the part of a shirt that stretches over the shoulders, usually made out of a doubled piece of fabric. Or, a pair of fabric on trousers (especially jeans) or a skirt, across the back of the garment below the waistband. We will be looking into different types of yokes such as a back yoke, mesh yoke, front yoke & waist yoke.

Back Yoke!

Back yoke is the yoke that sits on the back of the shoulder. This yoke is mostly seen on the shirts. It gives strength to the garment thus it gets easy for the movement. Ritu Kumar’s Chiffon (X-ray fabric if you remember 😉 ) shirt has back yoke detail and you can wear it for any casual event. Roll up the cuff and half tuck will make you look put together. Add a delicate necklace, wrist watch & you are good to go.

Mesh Yoke!

Bhaavya Bhatnagar’s maxi dress has mesh detailed yoke. The purpose of this yoke here is to add more interest to the garment. This tone on tone embellishment makes it look classy. Grab this garment and look divine don’t forget to carry a classy clutch. I have picked one for you right here…

Front Neck Yoke!

I have seen people calling yoke as a patch which is wrong. Patch is always stitched on to the fabric where the yoke is stitched as a part of the garment. I am sure you guys will use the right term from now on. 😉 Ritu Kumar’s dress has a front embroidered yoke which looks really elegant. This is a perfect pick for brunch or coffee date. Add a denim jacket over it, a sling bag & either sneaker or nude heels will do. Enjoy your time with your special one 🙂

Waist Yoke!

The main purpose of a yoke is to eliminate darts & still give the perfect fit. Here Bhaavya Bhatnagar has also eliminated waist darts and transformed it into a waist yoke where she has also added a rexine stripe detail which is making it look more interesting. This skirt is perfectly suited for any casual meet. Pair it with any plain top so that it doesn’t disturb skirt’s print. Tuck in the top, add a clutch and kitten heels. There you go!

See you soon with the next blog! Toodles 🙂
