Celebrity Fashion Galore!

The fashion industry is constantly evolving and irrespective of the time period, characterisation of trends by celebrities have been forged in history to trigger the interest of fashion enthusiasts worldwide. Over the years, there has been an upsurge in styles dictated by the likes of movie actors, royalty or government officials as well as television personalities. These style icons not only serve as an inspiration for the public’s preference towards fashion but are also key influencers in a designer’s take on the future of fashion.

To this day, we still cannot subdue the timeless appeal of celebrity fashion. In support of this statement, we need to take a walk down the memory lane. Some of the iconic choices that have endured the test of time highlights the legendary flying dress worn by Marilyn Monroe that inspired both Hollywood stars and designers or the sleeveless black dress adorned by Audrey Hepburn in her movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (1961) or the classic silhouettes and feminine frocks personified by the Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly during the 50’s.

Reflecting on “The Great Gatsby” period, the fictional character of Daisy Buchanan is channelled on a day-to-day basis by modern rendition of 20’s T-strap shoes, head scarves and demure collars.

Our very own Bollywood has contributed remarkably in this spectrum as well. The retro fashion of polka dots and miniskirts introduced in the movie Bobby (1973) by Dimple Kapadia was a rage all through the 70s. Yash Raj films essayed the simple yet sensual chiffon sarees in a string of movies in the 80s and 90s era.

The other popular trends that followed includes Kareena Kapoor’s iconic “sharara” from Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001) that became an ideal wedding outfit option for its comfort and style and, Priyanka Chopra’s portrayal of ‘Desi Girl’ song in the movie Dostana (2008) marked the addition of slinky yet scintillating cocktail-ready sarees as a wardrobe staple.

Not to be taken lightly is the legacy of trends initiated by our leading lady in fashion, Sonam Kapoor whose sublime representation of conventional sarees paired with long jackets and boots while pioneering the athleisure industry truly changed the game of contemporary fashion.

While Bollywood is big on trendsetting, the television medium is undoubtedly the underdog in this race. Being a significant part of one’s everyday life by becoming a household name, television personalities have successfully shed their conservative depiction of fashion with the inclusion of Indo-western and eccentric attires.

From Shagun’s (Anita Hassanandani) seductive designer blouses to Komolika’s (Hina Khan) quirky bohemian vibe, these popular styles have substantially replicated long after the demise of their characters. Let us not forget how Jennifer Winget wooed her audience in “Beyhadh” by her bold monochromatic outfit selections that added a depth of personality to her character as the formidable Maya.

While we have established the fact that celebrities play a major role in steering the wheels of our fashion industry, tune in next week to learn more about the celebrity inspired fashion choices Date The Ramp has to offer!
