A capsule wardrobe is one that consists of a few essential pieces of clothing that will never go out of style.
Even though you have an enormous amount of clothing, do you always go to back to certain items and wear them till they are worn out? Well, Susie Faux understood you. This term was coined by a London boutique owner Susie Faux in the 1970s and seems to have caught the wind with the peak of minimalism and normcore trends in recent times.
So why should anyone switch to a capsule wardrobe?
I’ll put in a simple way.
Capsule wardrobes allow you to declutter years of reckless shopping and make it easier for you to get dressed every day.
You get a chance to go all Marie Kondo on your clothes. Whatever sparks joy, isn’t it?
A capsule wardrobe is a very practical approach to sartorial organisation.
Simple ways to approach a capsule wardrobe
If you are looking to start a capsule wardrobe, then there is a high probability that you’re not going to have an idea of where to begin and end.
Not to worry, I’ve come up with a simple solution to help begin your decluttering journey.
Step 1
Mentally divide your clothes into three sections. Since India has 3 major kinds of weather- summer, monsoon and winter. You can alter these sections based on how the weather is where you live.
Step 2
Time for Marie Kondo to take action. Empty your whole wardrobe onto your bed. Trust me there is no other better way to do this.
Step 3
Time to segregate
Depending on your dressing style, choose essential clothes that you would wear for the summer. Choose 6-7 (or more) bottom wear and a similar number of tops. Stick to a specific number. That is the key to a capsule wardrobe.
Extras- these include hats, scarves and other items you can’t live without in the summer
If you are adding new pieces to your collection then make sure you replace it with the old ones to keep the number.
Once you step into the monsoon season make sure to clean out the summer wear and make space for a new set of clothes.
Monsoon calls for warm yet resistant kind of clothing. Again, maintaining a number is important.
Extra- Raincoats, protective travel gear and so on.
Cleaning out your wardrobe 3 times a year. Doesn’t that sound better than constantly struggling with a messy mound every day?
Winter calls for the third cleaning of the year. This time you need to make space for your essential winter pieces that will keep you warm and also won’t send you on a mad hunt every day.
So what will you do about the winter clothes during summer and vice versa?
The main aim of a capsule wardrobe is to keep your essentials accessible to you when you need them. During the summers, your summer capsule wardrobe must be kept at the forefront while the other season clothes can be stored elsewhere. When monsoon or winter comes around, you can bring those clothes to the front.
On a side note
Once in a while we all need to glam up for an event or birthdays and we usually end up buying bomb outfits but they don’t really fit into our daily lives that much. They just end up taking a lot of wardrobe space.
To avoid this, renting clothes is a good option that is catching wind. At DateTheRamp, you can rent designer clothes (Ritu Kumar, Shantanu & Nikhil and so on) for a fraction of the price. Go on to datetheramp.com when you need some glam without giving up precious space!
This method works differently for each individual. Try it for yourself and be sure to let us know how it went!
Intresting 😄
